How to choose the right cocktail glass?

Comment bien choisir son verre à cocktail ?

Summary

Have you ever wondered why a Mojito is always served in the same type of glass, and why every cocktail recipe, with or without alcohol, specifies the type of glass to use? Behind this seemingly insignificant detail lies a whole art form. The shape of the glass is not merely aesthetic: it influences how the aromas are released, the perceived freshness, and even how we enjoy the cocktail.

From the Martini glass to the Margarita glass, and from the Sling to the Caipirinha, each glass shape has a specific function. It's a bit like an invisible ingredient in the recipe, capable of transforming the entire tasting experience. Mixologists know this well: the choice of glass is as strategic as the choice of ingredients.

In this article, we invite you to delve into the world of cocktail glasses. Through our mocktails crafted with our non-alcoholic aperitifs, you'll discover why every glass choice is carefully considered. You'll see how it transforms the experience and enhances the enjoyment of the aperitif.

Short drinks and long drinks: two main categories of glasses

OSCO bottle

Before exploring the different glasses, it's helpful to distinguish between two main categories in our non-alcoholic recipes: short drinks and long drinks. This distinction is primarily based on volume. Short drinks include beverages under 12 cl, which are more concentrated and often enjoyed without ice, while long drinks exceed 12 cl and are lengthened with ice cubes or mixers. This difference in size guides the choice of glass and directly influences how each cocktail is enjoyed.

Martini and whisky: the glasses for "short drinks" cocktails

In the category of short drinks, two shapes stand out in particular and appear regularly in our recipes: the Martini glass and the whisky glass. Their selection is not arbitrary, as each plays a specific role in revealing all the nuances of our aperitifs. Even seemingly simple details, such as the presence of a stem or the shape of the opening, subtly influence how your drink is perceived on the palate.

The Martini glass

The Martini glass, recommended for the OSCO Cosmo or the OSCO Daiquiri , is recognizable by its V-shape. Its conical silhouette and slender stem help keep the drink cool, as hand contact is avoided by holding it by the stem. Its funnel shape also concentrates the aromas towards the nose, making each sip more intense and enjoyable. Historically, this glass appeared in the 19th century under the name of "cocktail glassIt quickly became popular during Prohibition, thanks to its size and narrow shape which made it practical in speakeasies and easy to discard in case of a raid. In the 20th century, it took the name of "Martini glass", referring to the Martini liqueur which was enjoying great success at the time.

The Whiskey Glass

Whiskey Glass

While the Martini glass is designed to preserve the drink's chill, the whisky glass is meant to be held in the hand and allows body heat to subtly permeate the glass. Our OSCO on the Rocks is ideally enjoyed in this glass, also known as an Old Fashioned glass. Its wide opening allows the aromas to fully develop, while also letting you savor the cocktail at your own pace. Its thick base securely holds ice cubes without risk of breakage, and its sturdy rim helps maintain the drink's temperature. The ice cubes gradually dissolve in the Rouge Ardent , softening the intensity of the aperitif and revealing its delicate nuances.

Long drinks: Spritz and Highball, the must-haves

In the long drinks category, our recipes feature two iconic glasses.: the balloon glass and the Highball, chosen to highlight the effervescence and freshness of your creations.

The Balloon Glass

Whiskey Glass

The balloon glass, also known as a Spritz glass, is undoubtedly the more recognizable of the two. A common sight on patios, its appeal extends beyond its large size; it possesses characteristics that make it perfect for enhancing this type of cocktail. Combined with our various non-alcoholic Spritz versions made from our aperitifs, it allows you to fully appreciate the balance of our blends.

Its round, generous shape makes mixing the ingredients easy while preserving their aromas. The wide bowl provides ample space for the cocktail to aerate and the tonic's bubbles to fully develop. Finally, its generous size allows for a significant amount of ice, essential for a perfectly chilled Spritz, while maintaining the harmony of flavors.

The Highball

To conclude this journey into the world of mixology, we present the Highball glass, also known as the Tumbler. This versatile glass is ideal for light and refreshing drinks such as the Mojitosco or the Pink Paloma . Its height makes it easy to hold ice cubes and to mix the aperitif with a mixer while maintaining a balanced flavor. This shape also helps preserve the fizz of the tonic, guaranteeing a sparkling taste with every sip.
